ZURICH -- The New York Times says Swiss authorities have
conducted another series of pre-dawn raids and arrests as part of
investigations into corruption in international soccer.
The newspaper, citing law enforcement officials, reported
that at least some of the arrests took place at the same luxury hotel where
FIFA officials were arrested in May in early morning raids that rocked the
sport.
Sepp Blatter was not among those arrested, according to law
enforcement officials cited in the report.
The report said Swiss police entered the hotel, the Baur au
Lac, through a side door at 6 a.m. local time. A hotel manager told visitors in
the lobby they had to leave the property because of "an extreme
situation."
Authorities in Switzerland, where FIFA has its headquarters,
and in the U.S. are investigating current and former senior soccer officials on
charges that include racketeering, money laundering and fraud.
Two people were seen being taken to the hotel garage and
shortly afterwards two unmarked cars, which appeared to be police vehicles,
drove away from the establishment.
FIFA issued a statement to Press Association Sport, saying:
"FIFA became aware of the actions taken today by the US Department of
Justice. FIFA will continue to cooperate fully with the US investigation as
permitted by Swiss law, as well as with the investigation being led by the
Swiss Office of the Attorney General.
"FIFA will have no further comment on today's
developments."
Information from Press Association Sport was used in this
report.
